Permalloy plates and sheets contain mostly nickel (approximately 80%) and iron (20%), with trace amounts of chromium, molybdenum, or manganese added for additional mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. These materials have high magnetic permeability, low coercivity, and low core losses and are thus very efficient to use in magnetic field control. They are mechanically characterized by good ductility, moderate tensile strength, and stability of dimensions under stress. They have low eddy current loss and high electrical resistivity and hence are very suitable for use in sensitive electromagnetic applications where high precision and efficiency of energy use are essential.
