The typical composition of nitinol, a nickel-titanium alloy, is between 55 and 56 percent nickel and 44 and 45 percent titanium. Because of a reversible phase transition between the austenite and martensite phases, it has special qualities like shape memory and superelasticity. Tensile strength of up to 895 MPa, yield strength of about 195 MPa, and elongation of up to 10–15% are examples of mechanical properties. It is possible to engineer the transformation temperature to be between -100°C and +100°C. Nitinol sheets and plates are appropriate for both structural and biomedical applications due to their exceptional fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility.
